Jimena Vela Avitúa is a visiting student with the CCWJ from July 2026, joining from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Her work focuses on the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and failure behavior of Cr–Mo alloy steel welds (1.25Cr–0.5Mo / 2.5Cr–1Mo) produced using Hybrid Laser-Arc Welding (HLBW) and GTAW under various preheat and post-weld heat treatment conditions. Her research includes metallographic preparation and microstructural analysis, mechanical testing, chemical and fractographic analysis, and in-situ process monitoring of welding processes.
Jimena was interested in joining the CCWJ because of its reputation for bridging advanced academic research with industrial applications. She was particularly interested in the center’s work on Hybrid Laser-Arc Welding (HLBW) and the opportunity to study complex microstructural transformations, mechanical behavior, and failure mechanisms to further her goal of becoming a specialist in weldability and structural integrity.
Outside of work, Jimena enjoys fitness and running, visiting museums, baking, and experimenting with new recipes.
